Create a Spectacular Style Text Effect

In this tutorial we’ll create a cool looking 3D Style text effect.
Begin your work with creating a new file of 1280×1024 px and 72 dpi.
Then we shall use the Rectangle Tool (U) to draw the background of the picture to be.
Set the next shown parameters for the made new layer by making a mouse click on this layer in the layers’ palette. Blending Options>Gradient Overlay
Gradient’s parameters:
Using the Custom Shape Tool (U), try to represent the rays coming out of the central picture’s part.
Mark out the inside tops, applying the Convert Point Tool (holding on SHIFT button) and then press CTRL+T, while using Maintain aspect ratio for getting together the rays in a single point on the central part of the picture.
The layer’s parameters: Opacity 70%, Fill 0%
Blending Options>Gradient Overlay
Gradient’s parameters:
Create now a new layer (Create new layer) and select a standard brush of black color, Brush Tool (B) (Opacity of 10%) to dark out the picture’s edges.

I am stuck at the part where you have to make the rays i’ve done everythin like you said but after i add the gradient the rays don’t look anythin like you showed on here. did I do something wrong?
i’m useing CS4 not sure if thats the problem.

I’m using this guide as a newbie to Photoshop and to be honest I’m a little lost. I’ve learnt a lot from it but feel like I’m in at the deep end here. I think I’ll try something easier first. Thanks for the great tutorial anyway. I’ll come back when I know a little more.

I’m really lost on this I did almost everything you said I got stuck where it says:

I’m not very well at photoshop either, and I also got stuck at the rays explanation, but I sorted a way to do what you show here. Not sure it’s what you meant, but it worked.
select the Convert Point Tool (Direct Select Tool worked also), drag a box around all inside corners of the starburst. Hit ctrl+t or right click and select “free transform points” mark the “maintain aspect ratio” button at the top (the one that looks like a chain link), and hold Alt while dragging the selection box inwards (scale down) until the rays meet
I know this post is very old, but maybe new visitors get stuck at this same point… (I did)

Kursor button – he means arrows
Holding Ctrl+Alt hit down arrow several times and that automaticaly create new layers a little moved towards previous layer.

Dont understand what that means at all. What a shame. I was looking for a way to do this effect easily and this is the closest I got.

I AM LOST.. its a cool effect..i want to learn!!

i’m useing CS4 not sure if thats the problem.
Try adjusting the scale of the gradient. It’s likely that you have created your image at a different size to the tutorial and therefore you might need to tweak a few things differently.

- this part of the tutorial is saying that you need to adjust the custom shape so that the points meet in the middle.
To do this you need to use the selection tool (white arrow) to select the points in the centre of the shape, using shift to select multiple points.
Next you need to hit CTRL+T to enter free transform mode, and then while holding shift (to constrain the proportions) and alt/apple (to keep it centred while you scale), drag to pull the points into the centre.
Now the rays in your shape should meet in the middle.

I am with everyone who left comments – I can’t get past the ray thing, the explanations are really not clear how to do it. I have tried many things even what was written in the comments, I managed to get the outline but when I try to apply the gradient to create the sunburst it doesn’t work.
It would be nice if someone can explain how to create this, I know of another way to create a sunburst but want to learn how to do it this way.

This tutorial helped me finish my logo design.
I liked how you created a radical spiral ray with a gradient and custom shape.
One thing you could help with is: where did you get the custom shape?
I couldn’t find it and had to use a alternative. The end result was the same though.

For those stuck at the part where they have to do the rays:
After you have completed the steps with the gradient, right click on the layer – Convert to smart object. And thats about it.

Duplicate the text layer and move it up by one pixel. The short cut for duplicating a layer is Ctrl + J and the short cut for moving it up a pixel is Ctrl + Up arrow key (while keeping the text tool selected). Repeat this process 15-20 times until you have something like…

To all who are confused on the part, do this:
-Click A, this will give you the selection tool. If your arrow is white then you have the right tool. If it is black, then go to your toolbox, right click on the tool and select the white arrow (directional selection tool).
-Starting from the middle of your custom shape, hold shift and select all the blue points.
-Once you have them selected, click ctrl+T. Then go to the top where it says percentage and type in 0% for both width and height.
-There you have it, it should be done now. Just click the arrow at the right to apply settings.
