How to design an abstract Christmas illustration with colorful shapes and glass baubles in Photoshop CS5

Create the next shape.

Click on Add a layer style icon from bottom part of the Layers panel and select Gradient Overlay.

Click in the color bar to open the Gradient Editor and set the color stops as shown. Click OK to close the Gradient Editor dialog box.

We’ve got the next result:

Draw another shape as shown using Pen Tool (P).

Set Fill to 0% for this layer and click on Add a layer style icon from bottom part of the Layers panel, select Gradient Overlay.

Click in the color bar to open the Gradient Editor and set the color stops as shown. Click OK to close the Gradient Editor dialog box.

We’ve got the next result:

Let’s add another shape on our background.

Click on Add a layer style icon from bottom part of the Layers panel and select Gradient Overlay.

Click in the color bar to open the Gradient Editor and set the color stops as shown. Click OK to close the Gradient Editor dialog box.


Use Pen Tool (P) to draw the next shape as shown.

Click on Add a layer style icon from bottom part of the Layers panel and select Gradient Overlay.

Click in the color bar to open the Gradient Editor and set the color stops as shown. Click OK to close the Gradient Editor dialog box.

We’ve got the next result:

Draw again a shape.

Click on Add a layer style icon from bottom part of the Layers panel and select Gradient Overlay.

Click in the color bar to open the Gradient Editor and set the color stops as shown. Click OK to close the Gradient Editor dialog box.

We’ve got the next result:

Draw another shape again.

Click on Add a layer style icon from bottom part of the Layers panel and select Gradient Overlay.

Click in the color bar to open the Gradient Editor and set the color stops as shown. Click OK to close the Gradient Editor dialog box.

We’ve got the next result:

Create one more shape as shown, using Pen Tool (P).

Click on Add a layer style icon from bottom part of the Layers panel and select Gradient Overlay.

The gradient’s settings are the same with the previous example:

Draw the next shape.

Click on Add a layer style icon from bottom part of the Layers panel and select Gradient Overlay.

Click in the color bar to open the Gradient Editor and set the color stops as shown. Click OK to close the Gradient Editor dialog box.

We’ve got the next result:

Draw one more shape on the top of the canvas.

Click on Add a layer style icon from bottom part of the Layers panel and select Gradient Overlay.

Click in the color bar to open the Gradient Editor and set the color stops as shown. Click OK to close the Gradient Editor dialog box.

We’ve got the next result:

Finaly draw the last shape using Pen Tool (P).

Click on Add a layer style icon from bottom part of the Layers panel and select Gradient Overlay.

Click in the color bar to open the Gradient Editor and set the color stops as shown. Click OK to close the Gradient Editor dialog box.

We’ve got the next decoration on our Christmas background:

Create a new layer, select Hard Round brush of white color, set Opacity to 20% in Options bar).

Use this brush to add many circles of different diameter.

Next we’ll represent a ellipse, using the Ellipse Tool (U).

Set Fill to 0% for this layer and click on Add a layer style icon from bottom part of the Layers panel, select Stroke.

We’ve got the next result:

Great to saw a wonderful tutorial for Adobe. i am a newbie interested in designing. i really thought that the steps are very easy to follow to learn and design an illustration.

I can’t get the balls/ornaments to do that. my gradient is always centered in the middle. I followed the tutorial to a T and my ornaments didn’t turn out like in the instructions. How do I change the center of the gradient? cause the center now is directly in the middle, and the tutorial isn’t.
