How to create Abstract Starfield Background in Photoshop CS5

Click on Add a layer style icon from bottom part of the Layers panel and select Outer Glow.

We’ve got the next result:

Create a new layer and use on it the Soft Round brush of white color, set Opacity to 15% in Options bar.

Use this brush to paint along the lines the same way demonstrated below.

Click on Add a layer style icon from bottom part of the Layers panel and select Outer Glow.

We’ve got the next result:

Choose the Pen Tool (P), set the drawing mode on Shape Layers in Options bar and draw a small star of white color.

Click on Add a layer style icon from bottom part of the Layers panel and select Outer Glow.

Add Inner Glow:

We’ve got the next result:


Make many copies of the recently made layer with the star on it and apply the Free Transform (Ctrl+T) command to change the copies’ sizes and to place the copies as on the next picture it is indicated.

Combine in a group all the layers containing the stars (press CTRL button to select the necessary layers and hold on the left mouse’s button while dragging the selected layers on Create a new group icon from bottom part of the Layers panel). Set the Blending mode for the group to Soft Light.

Make a copy of the new group and set the Blending mode for the group to Normal. Use the Free Transform (Ctrl+T) command to change the placement of the copy on the canvas.

Set Opacity to 70% for the group.

Create a new layer and select the Soft Round brush of white color.

Use this brush to represent many small white dots.

Insert the mask on the layer by choosing Add layer mask on the bottom part of the Layers panel and choose the Soft Round brush of black color.

Paint in the mask to change the opacity of the white dots.

Create the next new layer and use on it the Soft Round brush of white color to represent more dots of smaller diameter.

Set Fill to 70% for this layer and change the Blending mode to Hard Mix.

Click Create new fill or adjustment layer from bottom part of the Layers panel and click to Curves to adjust the curve shape as shown to make a little color corrections.
