Concept development character

This is part 2 of concept development tutorial. As you remember we’ve started with black and white sketching: the figures and the faces. Our next step will be choosing a character for further production and coloring.

So, here is the character I find the best from this bunch.

Concept development character

Copy it to a new layer (the figure and the face too): leave the background clean: erase or delete the other ones. I have a PSD so it will be easier for me.

The next thing I’m going to do is : I’m going to attach the head to the figure of my character ( I have figure and the head on 2 separate layers.)

So I pretty like how it looks now but I still want to change it a little bit. So create a new layer and do some grayscale details with a mere brush without any settings.

I’ve changed directly some elements of my character like the head and some details.

So that is probably it for grayscale sketch: let’s do some coloring.

Here are the brush strokes and brush tips that I’m going to use. These are just basic brushes PS offers.

Drop some primary colors.

Begin to set some values (like on the left boot.) do it fast. Do not play and pick color every 2 sec.

Beginning to drop skin color (remember that skin has no Color – like in the matrix the movie the spoon is not real))

Flipping the image will give you the proper understanding of the image and the character pose.

Painting some texture on the character’s robe:

Now the next thing I really don’t like to do is to paint some basic elements almost at the end of my process.
The Chaplet:
Made using basic soft (glow) and basic (form) brushes:

More red color to the front (to viewer’s eye) row:

Now when you’re done with the character it is time to draw background. No details – just tones.

Some color adjustments and we are ready with this one. Hope you enjoyed this tutorial. more to come on texturing different surfaces using PS or Painter.
