Concept car design
In this tutorial we are going to practice some painting techniques and design a car concept.
For this one I will be using Photoshop CS2 along with my Wacom tablet.
So let’s begin with this.
Start by just selecting a circle using Round Marquee Tool.
Copy the selection into a new layer. Stroke the layer using Stroke in layer styles.
Then copy the stroked layer. Now it is possible to change the wheel base of our vehicle.
I will draw some lines to search forms better; just some mere straight lines.
Now as I’ve noticed the rendering of the wheels is usually done in the end of all the concept design, but I will make it right now.
Select the whole wheel layer not to cross the border while rendering.
For this operation I will use a Soft Brush.
Now make a selection that is about rim size and tap delete, deleting all that says within the selection area.
Looks quite ok.
Do the same with rear end wheel.
I’m also making a rim pattern here.
The rim itself was painted on a new layer so just merge the rim and the tire; real set and front set.
In the eng you should get 2 painting layers instead of 4.
I will also make some more rim details here using small rough brush with Size Jitter set to pen pressure.
Now select basic rough edge brush and begin to paint basic shape of the vehicle (on a new layer of course).
I will change the brush but it is not so important when you are building just a silhouette.
It seems we’ve managed to create a shape that looks like a beach buggy or something like this.
Now let’s do some rendering here.
Select this are and pain in it.
Continue to work with shadow/highlights.
Ad some details on the fly if you can.
Zoom
in – Zoom out – it is very important when working
digitally, because you don’t see the whole picture, you
always zoom in to work on some details, well if you have something like
25 inch monitor don’t read that.
Working on some details.
Just check the picture to see the progress.
Now choose a softer brush with all the settings in Shape dynamics are set to pen pressure.
And we will also use basic rough 1px brush to paint some borders.
In industrial and car design usually use paths to create perfect edges to render some details. So create this king of path.
Turn it into a selection. It still has perfect edges.
Render the colors inside the selection. Or copy the layer into a separate layer.
I will also apply some layer styles to this small object.
I will add some black to the rear end of the vehicle (on a new layer).
And erase back some parts.
Erase the edges for good.
I’m using the eraser to maybe change a little it some shapes of the car.
And we are finished with that.
The background effect was made by Shape transformed basic round rough edged brush.
Scattering is set to Pen Pressure; Opacity Jitter is set to Pen pressure. Size and Shape jitter is also set to pen pressure.
And, so, enjoy my concept. Will be better next time.
Enjoy and try it!
