Creeplinn – story beyond murder
Hello and welcome in texture practice tutorial. In this tutorial we will make and illustration, quite a creepy one. Moreover
we won’t use Wacom for painting, so ever mouse users will be able to do something like this. So as a theme for this
illustration we will take Silent hill video game series. For those who have played the series will understand the final
result better, for those who hadn’t, visit some game series sites. This will help you to understand the color gamma, I’ve
chosen and texture process better. So, enough talking, let’s stat creating.
Pick a document. I’ve chosen almost wide format, only vertically, with 150 DPI.
So in several next stages we will be making texture. The way I like to do it, I will create 3 separate layers and use high
definition big radius brushes. So follow me on the screenshots.
3 layers – 3 different brush tips.

The top layer I set to hard light and opacity jitter is set to about 80%.
So, next step is: coloring this entire grayscale pattern. We will color each layer separately using layer styles – color
overlay. So here are my colors starting from the bottom layer.
Here is my result and current thought. And my current thought is: here you can see the most lightened parts of the image so
why don’t we use them as the natural lighting to some form we are about to do.
And here is the method we are about to use. Create a new layer and fill it completely with black.
Next step: create a mask to this black fill layer. See my mask and gradient unmask settings.
I’ve unmasked some parts on the black fill layer so we can see the picture there.
Flip the image:
Now look at it closely and imagine if it’s a face (and it is) where the most important elements should be. I mean the eyes,
the nose and the mouth.
So I think the eye will be right here.
I’ll also create some additional details like some stitches.
The teeth: here I will use my wacom G4.
And some text there because it seems to me that it would be a great horror book cover.
So this is it for Silent hill tribute: A great game with great characters and story. I remember that I was really scared when
playing this game back then. Thank you if you liked this one. I just hope you found something useful from this tutorial even
if it not shiny and has no glow like effects.
And remember to practice a lot, to try different mediums and to grow professionally.
