Rendering of PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0

Unfortunately, Central 5.4 is only certified to generate PDF output for versions of Adobe Acrobat Reader prior to version 5.0. Adobe has made changes to the Acrobat Reader 5.0 engine, which affects how certain objects (most noticeably transparent graphics) are rendered.

The main problem with using Acrobat reader 5.0 is the way it handles graphics. The Central 5.4 readme file now has information on how to work around this problem.

» Acrobat Reader or Exchange for UNIX Fail to Start in Navigator or From a Command Line
    Published 05/7/2006
     Issue

When you try to start an Adobe Acrobat viewer (i.e., Acrobat Reader or Acrobat Exchange) for UNIX from within Netscape Navigator or from a command line, the system returns one of the following errors:

    - HP-UX returns the error "can't open shared library lib/libagm.so."

    - Sun Solaris returns the error "ld.so.1: acroread: fatal: libreadcore.so: can't open file; errno=2."

    - SunOS returns the error "ld.so: libreadcore.so.3: not found."

    Solution

Start Acrobat Reader or Acrobat Exchange from the <ACROHOME>/bin directory (where "ACROHOME" is the installation directory for Acrobat) by typing either of the following commands:

    - For Acrobat Exchange, type

    <ACROHOME>/bin/acroexch

    - For Acrobat Reader, type

    <ACROHOME>/bin/acroread

    Additional Information

Acrobat viewers are designed so that multiple platform binaries can load onto one server system. The acroread and acroexch files in the <ACROHOME>/bin directory contain scripts that determine which UNIX platform the workstation is running. Once the script determines the platform, it sets the environment variables, then calls the acroread or acroexch executable from the appropriate platform bin directory. Attempting to run an Acrobat viewer directly from the platform bin directory causes errors because the environment variables have not been set correctly.

» Adobe Reader for Nokia Phones
    Published 05/7/2006

Q: What is Adobe Reader for Nokia Series 80 Communicator software?

    A:

Adobe Reader for Nokia Series 80 Communicator is free software that lets you view and navigate PDF documents on a Symbian OS™ powered device, such as the Nokia 9500 Communicator. Adobe Reader for Nokia Series 80 Communicator enables you to view PDF files stored on your desktop computer using your Symbian OS powered device.

Q: What Symbian OS devices does Adobe Reader for Nokia Series 80 Communicator support?

    A:

At this time, Adobe Reader for Nokia Series 80 Communicator runs on Nokia Communicator 9210, 9290, and 9500 series phones.

Q: How do I download Adobe PDF files to my Symbian OS device?

    A:

To download PDF files to your Symbian OS device, use the Receive Via Infrared command, or download PDF files from your computer, your e-mail account, or the Internet. Follow the directions in the documentation that came with your device to connect to a computer or the Internet, and to download and transfer files.

Q: How will Adobe PDF files look on my Symbian OS device?

    A:

Adobe Reader for Nokia Series 80 Communicator adapts PDF files for high-quality viewing on smaller screens while preserving their rich content.

Q: What does it mean when a PDF is “tagged”?

    A:

When a PDF is tagged for re-flow, you can re-flow the content to fit on the smaller screen of your Symbian OS device. PDF authors create a tagged PDF file using Adobe Acrobat®.

To check whether the document is tagged, select Document Info from the toolbar. A “Yes” next to the Tagged PDF field means the PDF is tagged and you will be able to re-flow the PDF on your handheld device.

Q: What viewing options are available for PDF files on my Symbian OS device?

    A:

On Symbian OS devices, you can view a PDF file in two ways:

    1) Re-flowed layout: If your PDF file is tagged, you can use Reader for Nokia Series 80 Communicator to re-flow text and images so they are viewable within the confines of the smaller screen on your device. That way, you don’t have to scroll to read the entire file.

    2)

Original document layout: You can view Adobe PDF files exactly as intended by the author. This option preserves the structure of the original file. Text and images remain where the author placed them.

Note that untagged Adobe PDF files can be viewed only in original document layout.

» Unable to save changes with Acrobat Reader (6.0 and 7.x)
    Published 05/7/2006
Unable to save changes with Acrobat Reader (6.0 and 7.x)

Adobe Reader 6.0 and Adobe Reader 7.x allow you save a copy of a PDF file to your local hard disk. However, they do not let you save changes you make (such as incremental saves while filling out a form) unless the PDF file is rights-enabled. To save changes in a PDF file that is not rights-enabled, you must use Adobe Acrobat Standard or Professional. For information about purchasing Acrobat 6.0 Standard or Professional, visit the Adobe website at http://store.adobe.com/store/products/department.jhtml?id=deptAcrobatFamily .

You can use Adobe LiveCycle Reader Extensions to create a rights-enabled PDF form that enables Adobe Reader users to comment on, complete, save, distribute, submit, and add digital signatures to the form. When you open a rights-enabled PDF form in Adobe Reader, a dialog box appears outlining the extended capabilities of the PDF file.

To view or download sample rights-enabled PDF forms and to learn more about Adobe LiveCycle Reader Extensions, visit the Adobe website at www.adobe.com/products/server/readerextensions/ . For more information about rights-enabled PDF forms, see document 315823 , "Introduction to Adobe Reader 6.0," or document 330983 , "Introduction to Adobe Reader 7.0."

» Asian and Central European font packs for Adobe Reader
    Published 05/7/2006

If the author of an Adobe® Portable Document Format (PDF) file embeds CJK and Central European (CE) fonts in a PDF document, then any language version of Adobe Reader® software will be able to display the CJK and CE text on any system without additional software. If the author of the PDF document uses CJK or CE fonts but does not embed them in the document, then the correct fonts will need to be installed in order to view the Adobe PDF file on non-native systems.

Adobe Acrobat® Reader 5.x users must download Asian font packs from this page. Adobe Reader 6.0 was the first version of Reader to download the correct font packs on demand, although they are offered on this page as well for users wishing to download them in advance.

The Central European pack contains more than 60 Latin, Cyrillic, and Greek scripts. View the script table for details.

Asian and Central European fonts for Macintosh

Adobe Reader for Macintosh provides Asian and CE fonts as an optional component at the time of download. They are not available on this page as a standalone download. Central European fonts are available in Adobe Reader 7.0 only.
