    Published 07/15/2006 | FrameMaker |

File Info metadata values are not imported from one document to another in FrameMaker

    Issue

When you import formats from one Adobe FrameMaker document to another, metadata information (from Document Properties) is not imported.

    Solutions

Do one of the following solutions:

Solution 1: Install Adobe FrameMaker 7.2.

To purchase an upgrade from Adobe, visit the Adobe Store at http://store.adobe.com/store/ , choose Print Publishing under Find Products By Department, and choose Adobe FrameMaker.

To locate an authorized reseller, visit the Adobe website at www.adobe.com/store/customerregistration/other_places.jhtml .

Solution 2: Add the document properties in FrameMaker.

    1. Open the document missing the metadata.

    2. Choose File > File Info.

    3. Add the metadata to the File Info window.

    4. Click Set.

Solution 3: In FrameMaker 7.2, install the 7.2p158 (Windows) or the 7.2p156 (UNIX) update.

To download the FrameMaker 7.2p158 (Windows) or7.2p156 (UNIX)update, visit the Adobe website at www.adobe.com/support/downloads/ and chose FrameMaker for Windows or UNIX.

You can disable this behavior by installing the update as follows:

    -- On Windows:

Note: Adobe technical support does not support editing the maker.ini file. This information is provided as a courtesy only.

    1. Open the maker.ini file (by default, this file is located at %programfiles%/Adobe/FrameMaker 7.2).

    2. Locate a section called [Preferences].

    3. Add the following line to the end of the existing section:

    CopyFileInfoOnImport = Off

    4. Save the maker.ini file.

    5. Restart FrameMaker for this setting to take effect.

    -- On Solaris:

    1. Edit $HOME/fminit/usenglish/.fmpreferences.

    2. Add the following line to the end of the existing list:

    Maker.CopyFileInfoOnImport: False

    4. Save the .fmpreferences file.

    5. Restart FrameMaker for this setting to take effect.

    Background information

When you select File > Import > Formats > Document Properties in FrameMaker versions earlier than 7.2, file metadata does not import. For users who expect this feature to function as it did in versions of FrameMaker earlier than 7.2, Adobe has added a non-user-interface setting to revert this fix.

    Solutions

Do one or more of the following solutions:

Disclaimer: Adobe doesn't support third-party software and provides these instructions as a courtesy only.

Solution 1: Install Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Outlook Express.

For information on installing and configuring Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Outlook Express, go to www.microsoft.com/ .

» Disable or enable the clear history stack warning (FrameMaker 7.2)
    Published 07/15/2006 | FrameMaker |

Disable or enable the clear history stack warning (FrameMaker 7.2)

Adobe FrameMaker 7.2 has multiple undo functionality, however, you can clear the undo history stack with in certain actions. FrameMaker displays a warning message "Cannot be undone. Undo history will be lost. OK to continue?" if the action you are about to take will result in the loss of undo actions. See page 46 of the FrameMaker 7.2 supplement in Program Files/Adobe/FrameMaker 7.2 for a list of commands that will clear the undo history stack.

Important: Saving a document clears the undo stack, but does not display a warning message.

Note: In previous versions of FrameMaker, the warning message "Warning: this action cannot be undone." only affected the ability to undo the action you were about to perform. In FrameMaker 7.2, this warning indicates that you will lose all of the actions in the undo stack.

To Enable or Disable the Show Warnings While Clearing History feature:

    1. Choose File > Preferences > General.

    2. Check (to enable) or Uncheck (to disable) the Show Warnings While Clearing History checkbox.

    3. Click Set.

You can also enable or disable the following options:

-- Once For Every History Clearing Command: Displays the warning discussed in the FrameMaker 7.2 supplement once for ever scenario and then will not display it again.

-- Always: Displays the warning dialogue for every scenario that clears the history every time that scenario happens.

Once you set either of these options, a pop-up window displays the message "Cannot be undone. Undo history will be lost. OK to continue?".

» Error "The Filter encountered an error and could not complete the translation" when you import a PDF file (FrameMaker 7.0-7.1 on Windows)
    Published 07/15/2006 | FrameMaker |

Error "The Filter encountered an error and could not complete the translation" when you import a PDF file (FrameMaker 7.0-7.1 on Windows)

    Issue

When you import a PDF document into Adobe FrameMaker 7.0 or 7.1, FrameMaker returns the error "The Filter encountered an error and could not complete the translation."

    Details

The PDF file was created in Acrobat 7.x and saved with Acrobat 7.x (PDF 1.6) compatibility.

    Solutions

Do one or more of the following solutions:

Solution 1: Upgrade to Framemaker 7.2.

FrameMaker 7.2 provides an updated import filter compatible with PDF 1.6 or earlier. If you upgrade to a current version of FrameMaker, then you can open PDF 1.6 files. To upgrade to FramMaker 7.2, visit the Adobe Store at http://store.adobe.com/store/products/master.jhtml?id=catFrameMaker or contact Adobe Customer Service.

    To contact Adobe Customer Service:

-- In the United States or Canada, call Adobe Customer Service at 800-833-6687.

-- In regions outside of the United States or Canada, visit the Adobe website at www.adobe.com , select your region from the pop-up menu at the top of the page, and then click Contact Us.

Solution 2: Recreate the PDF file.

Re-create the PDF file in Acrobat 7.x using job options that specify compatibility with Acrobat (PDF 1.5) or earlier. 6.0

    Background information

The FrameMaker 7.2 PDF import is fully compatible with Acrobat 7.0 (PDF 1.6).The PDF import filters in FrameMaker 7.0 and 7.1 are fully compatible and tested with PDF 1.5 (Acrobat 6.0) and earlier. There are certain instances where you might not recieve this error in FrameMaker 7.1; such as if your Acrobat 7.x PDF does not contain elements unique to the PDF 1.6 specification (that is, embedded OpenType fonts). In this case you might successfully import the PDF to FrameMaker 7.1.

» History palette is blank in FrameMaker (7.2 on Windows, UNIX, Solaris)
    Published 07/15/2006 | FrameMaker |

History palette is blank in FrameMaker (7.2 on Windows, UNIX, Solaris)

    Issue

When you work in a FrameMaker document, the History palette clears all actions or becomes blank.

    Detail

You performed an undoable action such as saving, changing the column layout, deleting a page or re-paginating the file.

Solution: Use undoable actions only when you're certain that you no longer need to refer to the history of actions in your FrameMaker document.

To familiarize yourself with undoable actions, see Chapter 5: Multiple Undo/Redo under the section "Commands that clear the command history" in the FrameMaker 7.2 User Guide Supplement.

    Background information

FrameMaker 7.2 includes several non-undoable actions that effectively clear the History palette by removing all actions. This prevents you from trying to undo or redo earlier actions that are no longer possible in the present state of the document, and may potentially damage the file. Non-undoable actions include all saving actions, including Save, Save As, and Auto-Save.

For more information on the History Palette, refer to Chapter 5: Multiple Undo/Redo in the FrameMaker 7.2 User Guide Supplement.
